Greater Williamson Road Business Association Gears Up to Co-Host the 2nd Annual Commonwealth Day of Play Alongside Governor's Office

Roanoke, Va — July 16, 2026. The Greater Williamson Road Area Business Association is co-hosting, along with the Governor's Office, the 2nd Annual Commonwealth Day of Play to be held at Brookside Par 3 Golf Course on Saturday, August 8 from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The Day of Play is part of the “Reclaiming Childhood,” initiative, which works to raise awareness and inspire youths and families about the importance of connection, physical activity, and community.

“The 2nd Annual Commonwealth Day of Play is a community-driven celebration that brings people of all ages together to go outside, stay active, and experience the joy of play,” said Valerie Brown, Executive Director of the Greater Williamson Road Area Business Association, the presenting sponsor of the event. “We're proud to once again co-host this special day at Brookside Golf Course, where families and friends can unplug, connect, and create lasting memories together. From games and recreation to health and wellness activities, Commonwealth Day of Play highlights the importance of active living while strengthening the bonds that make our community thrive.”

This year's festivities include various games for all ages to enjoy such as free golf, cornhole, tug-of-war, and sack races. There will also be prizes, giveaways, and raffles sprinkled throughout the event. Golf clubs, balls, and other equipment will be provided along with hot dogs, ice cream, snacks, and water for all to enjoy.

While families can attend at any time during the event for free, the first 20 kids to attend will receive a free sleeve of golf balls. If a child finds enjoyment in golf, parents who purchase a golf pass for a later date can bring their kids, free of charge.

“We're excited to welcome the community back for the 2nd Annual Commonwealth Day of Play,” said Milt Crandall, longtime owner of Brookside Par 3 Golf Course. “It's rewarding to see this event continue to grow as more families embrace the opportunity to step away from their screens and spend quality time together outdoors. Whether you're playing a round of golf, enjoying games and activities, or simply relaxing with a cool drink in the sunshine, we hope everyone leaves with great memories and a renewed appreciation for the value of play, fresh air, and community.”

Other organizations joining in on the outside fun are The First Tee of Roanoke, Roanoke County Police Department, Roanoke City Police Department, and Brain Injury Solutions. Sponsors include Valley Wealth Group, Brookside Par 3 Golf Course, the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke, and 5Points Creative.

The Brookside Par 3 Golf course is located at 6303 Williamson Road, with parking available at the course for all attendees. For further inquires, contact Valerie Brown at valerie@williamsonroad.org.

The Greater Williamson Road Area Business Association’s (GWRABA) basic purpose and role – as set forth 40+ years ago – is to represent the interests of local businesses, attract new businesses, and collaborate in both the City and the County to help those businesses grow, with a unified voice.
