Val Brown on The Mountain.Live Announces the Commonweath Day of Play event on August 8th.
Transcript:
Welcome to themountain.live. We are with Val Brown from the Williamson Road Area Business Association. She has not been on with us since restaurant week. So welcome back, Val.
Welcome into the middle of the summer. Hi, Chris. Thank you so much.
It's so good to be back with you. I'm glad to have you back also. And being that it is the middle of the summer, you have the big announcement to make today and congratulations for being selected again.
We've talked about it on the air, so it's not really a big announcement, but I'll let you go ahead and tell us what's going on on Saturday, August the 8th. Yes, thanks. We're really excited about this.
We are joining once again with the Commonwealth of Virginia for the Commonwealth Day of Play. We did this last year and we held it at Brookside Par 3 golf course on Williamson Road where we invited kids and their families to put down their electronics to come out and play. And we had well over 360 kids and their families there.
It was a huge day. So we're really excited to do it all over again this year. That was the biggest day of the summer.
And you do it at a time in the summer where there's not that much going on. So it's a great weekend to have that. And it was a great idea of the governor's office to do it.
I was wondering if they were going to do it again. Yes, they were in contact with us recently to finalize everything. They're pretty excited about it.
And the governor wanted us to know that she is aware that we are the only association in this greater area doing this. So her support and the support of everyone across the state is huge. So that's exciting in and of itself.
And you're probably the biggest one without a doubt west of Richmond. Probably. Yes, I think you're right.
Is this going to be at Brookside Plaza as well as over at Brookside Golf Course or is it just contained in the golf course area? No, it's still going to be at the Brookside Par 3 golf course greater area. We're going to have all kinds of things there. We are co-sponsoring it with the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke.
So that's another big coup for us. And they're excited to do a lot with that and for us. We're going to have not a bouncy house because we can't afford the liability for that.
But we're going to have a whole lot of water events to do. We're hoping to have a trout pond brought in. We are going to have first responders there, both from the city and the county.
We're going to have the fire department there. Last year, that was a huge hit because they brought the fire trucks and kids could climb all over those. We're going to have water games.
We're going to have the ability to play golf. Even if you've never picked up a golf club in your life, you have the ability to play. We're going to have cornhole events.
The Cool Kids Hot Diggity Dogs hot dog vendor is going to be there. And Blue Cow Ice Cream is going to have their van there. And everything is absolutely free.
We are funding everything. And we just want people to come out, have fun, play, not have their phones out. Q92 is going to be there as well.
They'll be there for a couple of hours with their games and their advertising. So it's going to be huge. We're really, really excited about it.
That is beautiful. And it's just another way that you guys serve the community, not Williamson Road, but for the entire region. So thank you so much for that.
Right. Everyone's invited. You don't have to be on Williamson Road to come.
You just need to want to have a good time. The event is from 12 to 4 on Saturday the 8th. And just show up and just plan to have fun.
Okay, Val. Well, thanks for coming on and giving us that big update. And we'll continue to update people on it.
I hope the weather will be spectacular. I think it probably will. So it is August the 8th.
That is, what's the hours again? 12 noon until four o'clock. All right. And you can get information at the Williamson Road Area Business Association.
That is WilliamsonRoad.org. Correct. Or you can email me at Valerie@WilliamsonRoad.org as well. Okay, Valerie Brown.
Thank you. And we'll talk to you again before the event to get an update. Thanks, Chris.
Really appreciate it and hope to see you there. Have a wonderful rest of your week. Thank you.
Thanks. You too.
