Val Brown Commonweath Day of Play Event Update

It's time for Val! She's the head of the Williamson Road Area Business Association and she's here as promised to give us an update on this Saturday's big event. It is the Commonwealth Day of Play and the Williamson Road Area Business Association is honored to be hosting it with the Governor's Office. So welcome Val! Thanks Chris, happy to be here.

I'm happy to have you here on this big important week for you guys. It's a big day coming up Saturday. Tell us all about it.

Oh, we're really excited. It's coming together well. As you said, you know, we're working with the Governor's Office.

We're also working with a few of the other big offices around the Commonwealth as well. Sam Rasoul and a couple of his people. We're working with the City.

In fact, just recently this past Monday Mayor Joe Cobb presented a proclamation to us and designated August 8th as Commonwealth Day of Play Day. So we're pretty excited about that. That's a big deal and you got it last year as well.

Everybody had a great time and so the theme to it is bring your family out. Family fun without electronics. Is that correct or not correct? That that is correct.

It's about bringing families together. So we invited families of all sizes and ages to put your electronics down, put the phones down, put the tablets down and just go outside and play. And you can't just tell people to do that.

You have to give them something. So we took an extra step last year and again this year and we partnered with Brookside Par 3 Golf Course and we're holding our event there. We're going to have first responders.

We're going to have fire trucks there. We're going to have some police cars. We're going to have free food.

A hot diggity dog is going to be there with hot dogs. Blue cow ice cream is going to be there for ice cream for all. It's just going to be a fun fun day.

And last year we had over 365 kids and their families and they were outside. They were playing golf. They were doing frisbee golf.

They were doing cornhole. They were just laughing talking and having fun and not a phone could be seen. It was wonderful.

So we hope to replicate it and make it even bigger this year. That's great. And there's going to be refreshments there as well, right? Right.

We'll have refreshments and we also were contacted by Brain Injury Solutions and they are bringing bicycle helmets and we'll be measuring both kids and adults for bike helmets that they're going to be giving away free. That's incredible. Everybody needs a bike helmet.

I can't preach enough about having a bike helmet on when you're especially on these new e-scooters that the kids all have. Those are too fast not to have a helmet on. Exactly.

100% agree. So the fire department, county, and city, are they going to be there? The city has overextended itself. So they may have an officer or two stop by but the county is definitely going to be there.

They're going to have some vehicles there for kids to climb in and out of and parents too for that matter. The fire EMS is going to have a truck there and last year just like this year that unit is going to be on call. So the kids got the biggest thrills when they were called out so you'd see the firefighters all jumping on board and taking off and then coming back and setting up again.

I mean it was just a lot of fun. A lot of simple everyday fun that didn't cost a thing but left so many wonderful memories. That's a big deal for a family.

It's a day that the kids will never forget. You'll remember that for the rest of your life. Those are great family events.

Absolutely, and Brookside is also offering for families that if parents want to in the future schedule some golf time for themselves that they can bring their kids in. There'll be no cost for the kids to play golf with the parents. And Brookside is great for that.

Shout out to them. Who owns that now? I'm not sure the exact owner but the Crandall family is very involved with that and it's somebody in that family line that owns it. And they are the best in dealing with the community and just making things happen to make people happy and out there.

You can drive by there any given day and you see people of all ages out there playing golf or talking about their next hit. Those nine holes keep people pretty busy. It's a great asset to Williamson Road and to the Roanoke Valley.

Plus it's cheap and it's a quick game. So it's a great golf course. There's not many nine holes left.

Correct. All right. Well, we'll see you Saturday and I hope you all have a very great day out there.

It looks like the weather's going to be kind of like it is today. You know, maybe a storm but probably not. So that's wonderful.

Right. And I only have plan A's. I never have plan B's.

It just takes too much work and time to do a plan B. So my plan A is that it's going to be a perfect day to be out there on the course to play, hang out, do some golf, do some cornhole, have hot dogs, have ice cream and just hang out with your family. It's fabulous. And I guess it's easy.

We can say it is sun, clouds or rain. You're going to do it either way because there's no plan B. Correct. Correct.

Absolutely. And I'm going for sun and maybe I'll allow for a few clouds, but that's it. Yeah.

And the weather, as far as the temperatures go, is going to be fabulous. Great August weather. And right before kids go back to school, what a great lasting memory.
